“Now hiring” signs. When's the last time you saw one of those?

Indeed, it's what we've been waiting to hear for almost two years, and many of us have in fact lost hope. That is of course, unless you're aware of what's currently happening in Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

According to a Global News story, Oilfield Companies in Weyburn are “struggling finding employees...not even trained employees".

Abby Kradovill, safety co-ordinator at Miller Well Services went on to say "We’ll gladly train anyone.”

New workers lured in with attractive compensation

Astonishingly, many rival oilfield companies are sharing workers in order to keep afloat. At it's darkest, some are even poaching employees from one another, luring them in with attractive benefits and compensation packages.

Jonathan Kmita, owner of Kmita Well Servicing said in the Global News interview “We’ve had to shut down rigs so that a different rig could get fully crewed to go work at a different job".

It just may be that 2017 is the year of the comeback.

This is what Oilfield job shop readers have been waiting for.

A Recruitment issue similar to 2012

“You’d think there’s people looking for jobs now, but we struggle worse now than [we] ever did at our busiest point looking for people,” Miller Well Services safety co-ordinator revealed.

As we know too well, wages took a hit when the price of oil dropped. However, conditions are improving and as demand for workers increases, so does compensation.

As more and more jobs open up, many companies - especially those in Weyburn - are hoping workers take notice and return.

Skepticism

Despite the seemingly good news, many are skeptical as to how long the 'boom' may last in Weyburn. Judging by comments on the Oilfield Job Shop Facebook Page, many have left the Oilfield behind them. "No thank you. I got myself a trade ticket and will never rely on the price of oil for job security again" said one user regarding the apparent industry bounce back.

Still another user commented "After being shafted for two years, I wonder how many will be rushing back?"

This sentiment seemed to tie in rather neatly with an article on CBC news where one current Weyburn resident is hesitant to return to Alberta for similar reasons.

"Southeast Saskatchewan reminds me of the way Alberta used to be," the former Alberta resident commented.

Weyburn in it for the long haul

Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy was quick to let interested job hunters know that “The oil industry seems to be seeing a revival. We’re seeing a lot more interest down here in different companies coming in who are connected with suppliers to the oil industry.”

“We’re open for business. We’ve got plenty of residential properties for sale, lots of vacancy rates in apartments or condos, so there’s places where they can come back,” Roy said in the Global News interview.
