The Government of Alberta is doubling 2020-21 spending on capital maintenance and renewal from $937 million to $1.9 billion.
According to an update on the GoA website, This funding will stimulate job growth and support Alberta’s economy.
The Government indicates that it will use the funds to resurface roads, repair bridges, restore schools, and fill potholes.
Ultimately, the expectations are that this increase in budget will lead to thousands of jobs across the province.
"By doubling our capital maintenance and renewal project funds, we will deliver much-needed improvements to important assets, keep companies operating and most importantly, keep Albertans working," said Premier Jason Kenney, in a release.
Around $410 million will be used on transportation and $60 million on operating, which covers work repairing potholes.
The province says there are 95 construction projects currently being worked on, while another 114 are in the planning and design phase.
“As the weather improves and buildings are empty, now is the perfect time for us to act,” added Kenney.
The original projects announced in Budget 2020, worth an estimated $772.4 million over the next 3 years, will create opportunities for private sector participation and support more than 3,000 new jobs by 2022.
